The Financial Times is a very reputable British International newspaper focused mostly on business alone. It started in the year1888 and specialized in reporting business news while making sure that they uphold the image of having an independent editorial opinion. It has been noted that it has been very brave in criticizing the financial decisions of the British government. This is probably why they are esteemed to be very honest by their readers. What started out as a decision to save on the cost of the paper it is printed on by using a pink colored paper, later turned out to be a brilliant branding idea from a marketing manager’s point of view.
Their distinctive color has led them to be highly recognizable anywhere in the world.
As the decades went by Financial Times slowly started to acquire its competitors and with the most notable being the acquisition of the “Financial News”. The “Financial News” being their largest competitor and with their acquisition of it came the higher circulation from the previous rival. They divided the scope of work though. The FT still concentrated on the financial news while the Financial News concentrated on blazing editorial reviews.
With the coming of globalization, the Financial Times started to cover business events that concern the whole world economy and the rest of the international community. They started to put their employees in major cities around the world in order to capture ground-breaking events as they happen. This expansion program has also been further speeded up by the increasing dominance of English language as the international language of business.
While they are trying to maintain the coverage of every events relevant to the economic activities of the world at large, they started to focus in covering financial news in four major areas. The Financial Times started to provide specialized financial news to the UK, Continental Europe, the US and the rest of Asia. It is considered to be the best source of the latest news concerning the European Union.
As of the present, the publication has managed to evolve its offering into the digital realm of news service. As they went by many rapid changes to their service and business model, they were able to influence even the online marketplace’s idea of earning revenue from the internet.
They were among the first one to have an advertising supported content in the internet. Later as this kind of business model didn’t yield too much success for them, they turned to being a subscription based online publication. Financial Times also started to publish in German language since their international subscribers are starting to surpass the numbers of their UK subscribers. This was also their response to a rapidly changing world market as a way to accommodate other nationalities.
The Financial Times also tried to improve its offering by including more feature content and also deeper analysis of business implications. The new editor was quoted to say that they want people to understand that Financial Times is more than just a financial newspaper but rather as a powerful business tool. They are targeting business owners in the first place. It is but natural to do this kind change in their corporate philosophy.
